Amazon, YouTube, and Online Ecommerce Intelligent Search is Flawed - I'll Explain

 Indeed, I have uncovered a flaw with the artificially intelligent search features that are often bragged about by companies online such as; Amazon, Stumble Upon, and YouTube, and I'd like to tell you why. If you watch a particular video for some particular reason, maybe on a blog or a website, that information is known to YouTube, if in fact it is a YouTube video which is stored on their site. Just because you watch a particular video does not mean you are interested in the topic, although you might be.

The problem is the artificial intelligence which runs in the background of these sites is not designed properly, and software rendering the results uses incorrect algorithmic readings. For instance if the search feature suggests a particular video I might like to see, and I don't click on it, then it assumes that it was a bad result, and will show less results like that in the future. However, that may not have been a bad result, I just might have already watched that video in the past and don't wish to watch it again.

Now then if it really was artificially intelligent, it would've already known that, and not suggested I watch a video which I have already watched. And in this process the system gets further away from the results I am interested in. Okay, so you want an example. Well, I like videos about;

  • Physics,
  • Aerospace,
  • Aviation,
  • Future Technologies,

And I must say there isn't a lot I have not seen these days, in those topics or things I do not know about. So, as I click on fewer and fewer of the results it brings back, it gets further and further away from my preferences, then if something new does come along, it's not going to tell me!

If I click on something new and unique, on a whim, it elevates that into my preferences, okay another for instance. I like a few country songs with decent lyrics and good vocals, but I am not a full-on country song type music guy, but YouTube keeps bringing back country songs, most are ones I do not care for.

With Amazon, same thing, although I admit it is a lot better. Stumble Upon for the same reason is now no longer worth watching because it just gives me a bunch of childish, low-IQ, mainstream stuff for 20-somethings, not my thing. Thus, I've stopped using the Stumble Upon system, and find it a challenge to discover anything worthy of my time using the suggested Stumble Upon, or YouTube videos.

If these companies really want to have people use their systems, they are going to have to do better than this, these AI systems are not smart enough yet, and need improvement. That improvement is not evolving and the innovation in that sector is far too slow for the number of users and viewers. It's just unacceptable, it's not good enough, and unless these folks can get it right, they are pissing people off.
